Paving a Brighter Future
When my wife and I moved to our home in Gilbert, we picked our home specifically because it is in CUSD. Our oldest son graduated from CUSD last year and our other three are all current students. We love this district and its teachers!
I'm a 4th generation Arizonan and come from pioneer roots. My dad grew up in the small town of St Johns, AZ and learned to work hard on a cattle ranch. I'm forever grateful to him for passing on that strong work ethic.
After graduating with my Masters in Science, Electrical Engineering nearly 20 years ago, I have worked for General Dynamics C4 Systems, Intel, Microchip, Maxim Integrated and most recently Cirrus Logic. I see a huge opportunity to expand CUSD's curriculum and vocations and to partner with the tech companies that call AZ home.
Outside the home, children spend more time at school than any other location. Ask any student and they'll tell you the bathrooms to avoid, the kids to stay away from. CUSD schools must be safe for ALL our students and our teachers.
Find a school who's students are performing well ahead of district and state averages, and you'll find parents who are engaged in their child's education, who volunteer their time, who donate goods and money. Parents are not the enemy - they're the customer.
CUSD has been AZ's premiere public school district but it faces intense competition from charter schools and ESA vouchers. Let's anchor the curriculum on academic fundamentals. Let's expand vocational opportunities by partnering with trades such as carpentry, masonry, plumbing. Let's grow engineering and stem related offerings and establish internships with tech companies for our Juniors and Seniors.

My wife and I love CUSD and love the teachers. All of our kids have been or currently are enrolled in CUSD schools. This is really an amazing public school district and I want to see it thrive! However, the district has had several consecutive years of declining enrollment and faces intense competition from neighboring charter schools. There are three areas that I believe if addresses can reverse the enrollment decline and make CUSD parents' first choice in Chandler, Gilbert, and Queen Creek: 1) Safety and accountability 2) Partnering with parents and 3) Academics and vocations
My first board meeting that I attended was in the fall of 2020. My wife and I could see how detrimental virtual learning was to our kids and others kids in our community and I wanted to add my voice to others to encourage the district to allow kids back into the classroom. I participated in four board meetings in person and at least two others virtually. I even considered running for the board in 2021 but chose to support two candidates that I felt aligned with my wife and I's values. I've attended two board meetings this year and should be at all of the remaining board meetings for this year (and hopefully for the next 4 years - wink, wink).
I served as vice president of my HOA for over 5 years and had responsibilities for overseeing the budget for most of that time. I have attended school board trainings for budget and for communication. I'm in my 3rd year as a young men leader in my church, planning, organizing and running weekly activities. I volunteer as a coach for my kids volleyball team. I am a Electrical Engineer with a Masters in Electrical Engineering. I lead verification teams and am responsible for estimating task efforts, assembling a schedule and then executing to that schedule. I prepare status reports with graphs and charts illustrating progress and conveying key details throughout the project to both internal and external customers. I love to mentor, teach young people - it's a truly amazing thing to see the light and optimism in their eyes as they gain confidence in themselves and what they're capable of!
This past summer, I had the pleasure and opportunity of being the manager for a Code2College intern. Code2College is a non-profit organization based in Austin, TX that provides underserved communities classes and internships in STEM fields, particularly software. I worked with a young lady who had just completed her junior year of high school. Her plans pre internship was to go into business. She had 0 experience/knowledge of hardware design and verification. She had never seen SystemVerilog. In the space of 2 short months, she was able to design and verify a Reverse Polish Notation calculator and demonstrate it works by loading the design onto an FPGA board. Asked how likely she was to go into digital design and verification after the internship on 1 to 5 scale, 1 being not all and 5 definitely - happy to say she said a 4!
I can help differentiate CUSD from the charter schools by expanding its curriculum to include more offerings in STEM related fields, particularly electrical engineering. Our young people can benefit so much from apprenticeship and internship experiences. With the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) building multiple fabs in Arizona, it's time to really innovate and partner with the tech industry to give CUSD students opportunities that will forever shape their futures.
